Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

First and foremost, I enjoyed it WAY more than Detective Pikachu.
Gamefreak, you done goofed.  Unless they had nothing to do with that movie.  In which case they dodge a bullet kinda?

Anyhoo, I saw Sonic this past Sunday.  It was better than I thought it would be.  And I was going into it with mixed feelings.  Why was a Sonic movie even made, why did the development team ignore 25+ years of preexisting assets and release one of the most hated trailers ever, was it going to be worth it?
Twas.
Though I will say, I was expecting way more people my age range.  Granted there were a lot of people there with their kids, so they could have been my age, but I could not fully tell.  I was super tempted to at some point stand up to the entire theatre and ask if any of these people's kids had even played a Sonic game.  I did not.  Only mild regret.

To that point I could definitely tell it was aimed towards kids.  To be thankful, at least in my opinion, it was not super geared to commercialization and toys.  Now that isn't to say they won't try it.  But the movie did stand on its own.  There were many jokes made that were of course low brow.  But to its credit, quite a few easter eggs, references, and good jokes were made too.  There is one particular towards the beginning that I will not ruin for you.  They done good on that one.

Now I shall go into more detail.

We have a rough Sonic origin story.  I did not fully expect that.  We are initially introduced to, let's call him teenage Sonic, being chased by Dr. Robotnik, then we fast reverse (I don't really like it when movies do this) to the start of child Sonic running around a very familiar looking island and we meet his caregiver Longclaw.  There is no explanation of where he actually comes from, or any form of explanation of his "Special Power".  But sure enough, a rouge band of echidnas who are just looking for de way happen upon him and try to take him out, forcing him to leave Longclaw and travel to Earth.

The story plays off the rings as being dimensional gateways, which I suppose is as good a use as any.

Sonic then roughly grows up on Earth, becomes a stalker, then makes friends.

The one thing I will say I super hated, but unfortunately understood, was they made him "floss", multiple times.  Curse Fortnite and that damn movement.

But all in all it was a good film, great kids movie.  If you don't wish to pay for movie tickets definitely check it out on Netflix or wherever it ends up.  If you do see it in the theatre, stay through the credits.  One, they are really entertaining credits, B, it's worth it.

6 rings out of video game tie-in movies.

Even more importantly was me getting to play DDR.  That made the the trip so much better than just the movie.
Sexy, dancing once again!
